Rec: Assess This [sg-1] (beginnings challenge)

Title: Assess This
Author: Betacandy betacandy
Rating: PG
Characters: Team, Dr. Fraiser
Spoilers: General for first season
Author's summary: On Janet Fraiser’s third day at the SGC, she meets SG-1 for the first time, as they return from the mission in "Emancipation". Sam gets in trouble, Daniel gets in trouble, Jack gets maternal, and Janet gets to go home and shower.

This feels like a continuation of the episode that just didn't make onto film. Everyone's wonderfully in character and still trying to figure out where they fit into the scheme of things.

"Beginnings" challenge!

So, first ever challenge--this is, as I said in the previous post, similar to the sga_flashfic challenges, but the emphasis is on exploring (often over-looked) characters and aspects of canon. There are a lot of cliches and fanon floating around, and we're encouraging you to take a good look at what's actually there in the shows.

We're kicking things off with a "beginnings" challenge, which might mean the events during the beginning of either of the shows, a character's beginning with the Stargate program, or even the beginning of the program itself--after all, the very first, aborted start of the Stargate program was back in 1945.

Write new stories, post stories you've already written, or recommend stories that fit the challenge. The deadline is the end of the month. Please use the !challenge tag for any submissions, since that will make it much easier for me to stick things in memories. And, of course, the stories need to meet the requirements for posting to the library.

Feel free to share any suggestions for future challenges.

Poll about monthly challenges

kriadydragon and I are thinking of running a monthly challenge, open to new fic, old fic, and fic recs. It would be similar to the sga_flashfic challenges, but the emphasis would be on exploring (often over-looked) characters and aspects of canon. There are a lot of cliches and fanon floating around, and we'd like to encourage people to take a good look at what's actually there in the shows.

To kick things off, we were considering a "beginnings" challenge, which might mean the events during the beginning of one of the shows, a character's beginning with the Stargate program, or even the beginning of the program itself--after all, the very first, aborted start of the Stargate program was back in 1945.

Participants could write new stories, post stories they have already been written, or recommend stories that fit the challenge requirements. The deadline would be the end of the month. And, of course, the stories would have to meet the requirements for posting to the library.

So, what do you think--yes? No? Have a better idea you'd like to share with us?

The Ties that Bind by Kristen999

Title: The Ties that Bind
Author: kirsten999
rating: PG-13 or T
Spoilers: season four, reunion
Warnings: Violence, language
summary: Ronon asks Sheppard to join him on a dangerous search unaware that some answers are gained in the journey.

A wonderful Ronon/Sheppard friendship piece that deals with the aftermath of Reunion. Action packed with a bad guy you love to hate, and an excellent character study of both the boys.

News

I would like to remind everyone that the canon library is not a recommendation site only. You are allowed to post links to your own stories or post the stories themselves. Also, links to gen and/or canon challenges or challenge communties are also permitted.

With that said, I would like to promote the following community - sga_genficathon. An all-gen ficathon for SGA (gen, not canon. So AUs are allowed.)

Encouraged are links to posts concerning fanon vs canon issues (see bratfarrar's entry below.) Those pesky fanon cliches have a way of being a bad influence on a fic, sometimes.

Rec: Canon vs. Fanon [sg-1]

For the past year or so, sg_fignewton has been slowly separating SG-1 canon from fanon - largely in reference to Daniel, but Jack's got an entry, and there's an excellent one on sorting out what exactly is and isn't canon. Which can be difficult to figure out, given all the various alternate and virtual realties the team visited over the years. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in writing an accurate portrayal of SG-1, or for simply becoming more familiar with the series.

Rec: Ghost Stories [sga]

Title: Ghost Stories
Author: Martha Wilson (ltlj)
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Team
Spoilers: General for the first season.
Author's summary: John was pretty sure SG-1 had never shown up, offered to help, and been told, Oh, well, uh, isn't there someone else you could send?

This story feels like it could easily fit into season one somewhere - an intriguing mystery, great team interaction, and a ghost. Or something along those lines. Features everyone being capable, which always makes me happy.

Between the Stars: A 'First Strike' tag

Author: reen212000
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Genre: General
Rating: PG
Summary: An episode tag for First Strike. This is obviously Rodney's POV.

So I was minding my own business when this one came out of the blue. A tag for First Strike. Not my best, but I needed something to get back in the swing of things. An exercise, if you will.

Leave No Man Behind by CoolBreeze1

Title: Leave no Man Behind
Author: CoolBreeze1
Rating: PG13
Characters: Sheppard, Weir, Team
Summary: John Sheppard returns to Atlantis alone and struggles with the fact that he left his team behind. Sheppard whump, some team whump.

Excellent handling of how John would react having to leave people behind, especially his team.

Rec: Acquisition by kikkimax - SG-1

Title: Acquisition
Author: kikkimax
Rating : None given though I would say PG-13
Warnings: none
Characters: Daniel Jackson, team
Summary: Jackson goes under cover as a slave for an ancient, lonely Goa'uld.

In my search for Sg-1 fics to post at this site, I came across this gem of a story full of adventure, a little whump, and humor. It involves a very amusing situation that the author handles very well, and the characterization of Daniel - how he would react to said situation - is, in my opinion, totally right on the mark. It's a fun read and the kind of story that could have been an episode.
